And a third Possibilitarian: Jeff Halper, founder & coordinator of the Israeli Committee Against Home Demolitions Jeff Halper, originally from Minnesota, a Jew living in West Jerusalem for over 30 years, is a stellar scholar, speaker and writer, known widely for his concept, The Matrix of Control. Equally important is his activism, risking his life frequently to block home demolitions and other acts of the Israeli Occupation. He stunned me with his idea of the Middle Eastern Confederation, a recognition that the problems of Palestine-Israel are regional ones—water, land, refugees, economic development, citizenship, etc—and require a regional solution. He suggested that the leaders of the region have much to learn from the European Union in its slow and sometimes painful evolution toward a regional entity. Sovereignty and nationalism, Jeff feels, often are at the root of conflict. |
