Spring Light—Gloucester Massachusetts :: April 2009

The light was variable, the wind strong, the air without rain, thank god. As late as late Friday evening rain had been forecast for Saturday, prompting some of my students to phone me to either mildly inquire whether we’d postpone one day, since Sunday was to be sunny and mild, or more strongly to insist we postpone because the likelihood of rain was nearly 100%. I argued that forecasting is notorious wrong, one student countered with his belief that forecasting is notoriously correct. Rather than a miserable wet day it was nearly ideal for photography: occasionally sunny, well-defined clouds, cool, very early spring like. And our theme is spring light. So, chatting with Courtney later, I offered, "When we meet for our last session, No. 4, in late May, I suspect we’ll see a vast difference in light."
