I wonder,
millennia ago, what was
the shape of this land? Who lived
and thrived here?
No lake. Instead
a confluence of earthly forces
in the form of many waters.
Flowing relentlessly
thru innumerable native communities—
I hear echoes of
fishers, canoers with their cargoes,
trappers, hunters, gatherers,
a great parade along the river.
“Our lives are rivers
that go to empty into the death
that is life.”
