Boston's Seaport

On an early luminous morning under a rapidly changing sky in the spring

The New England sky, a story

Two Lakota Sioux boys from South Dakota came to visit Boston. John, a young high school teacher known to one of their parents, brought them downtown for the sights. After walking for a few minutes, one turned and said, trembling, John, John, where’s the sky?

Much of New England is either forested or built up, truncating the sky. These boys had only experienced the openness of the Great Plains. They were horrified at the absence of sky and asked John, where can we see the big sky? John brought them to the waterfront, the tip of the seaport district, and there showed them a transparent, endless, vast, open Big Sky. The boys sighed in relief.
