Fall Light: Meadows

Rock Meadow & Beaver Brook Reservation in Belmont Massachusetts, October 31, 2015

What is a meadow?

Grassland, mown or about to be mown (the root of the word meadow). Hay to feed cattle and horses. Grass becomes hay, hay feeds cells, the remains become cow patties, horseshit.

Flatland, with variations. The Great Plains is one huge meadow, once grassland. Now dry and often barren, farmers flee dust or drought or flood. They abandon prairie, meadow, think they can live a better life in the city.

A place where I might curl up with my honey, Kathleen, out of site, under a lone tree or in thick grass, we copulate. Then snooze.

I might return here in the winter, remember the pleasures of summer, smiles of a summer night, miss the grass, sink in the snow, roll in the snow, make angels.

And then, another visit in the spring, same meadow, rivulets now rivering thru the grass, wetting my feet, soaking my socks, a new cycle has begun. Soon, new grass, new food for the animals and visions for my eyes and camera.
