—Photographic workshops taught by Skip Schiel in the spring 2016 term—

Spring Light Photographic Workshop: Cape Ann
To better understand how to work photographically with spring light, we'll visually explore Cape Ann, including Gloucester, Rockport, and Annisquam. We'll learn to see and feel widely, interpret and portray earth-oriented experiences, and reveal truths about this terrain and ourselves. We will accomplish this through a combination of examples, exercises, coaching, and writing. Be prepared to walk in possibly inclement weather, which is often better for photography. Basic experience with a digital or film camera (preferably one with manual override of controls) is required. For the first session, bring your camera (thoroughly tested, batteries charged) and up to five photo PRINTS showing your interests, level, and experience. The Center will arrange car-pooling. Limited to 12. PLEASE RESERVE THE SUNDAYS FOLLOWING THE SATURDAYS AS RAIN DAYS.

Four field trips, Saturdays, April 16, 11 am-3, April 23, 2-6 pm, and April 30, 5:30 am-9:30, and May 7, 4 pm-8. Review sessions on Fridays, 6 pm-8:30, April 22 and 29, May 6 and 13.

SLCA-SP16.01—$218

Adobe Lightroom Basic
An in-depth exploration of this powerful, relatively easy to learn photographic software. With it you can organize files, develop, print, and make them into a slide show, web page or book—and post to social media sites like Flickr and Facebook. This workshop requires laptops (not tablets or smart phones) with the latest version of Adobe Lightroom installed (Adobe provides a free downloadable trial copy. Purchase price is $150.) Limited to 10.

Five Wednesdays, 5:30 PM-7:30 PM. Begins Apr 13
LTRM-SP16.01—$160

Although I enjoy taking photographs on my own, Skip Schiel's classes give structure and direction, which adds another dimension to the experience. He also does these wonderful awareness exercises that help me look at things differently. It's an experience I take into other areas of my life. (Sy Friedland, Fall Light 2013)

I have owned a Lightroom tutorial video for 3 years—but the class was orders of magnitude more useful. (Adobe Lightroom Essentials, 2014)

Skip gave us ideas to think about while we were shooting. Shooting objects from different perspectives instead of just blasting away. One of the best things was that Skip was out there shooting with us. We could see after what he was looking at and what he was thinking. I have never had an instructor do that. (Winter Light, 2012)

Skip challenged us, gave thoughtful feedback and facilitated great discussions. The format of the class offered a mix of feedback, learning new techniques, seeing the work of other artists, and field trips to practice what we learned. The class flew by and I would have enjoyed a couple more sessions. (student in Night & Low Light Photography, summer 2011)
