Teeksa Photography—The Photography of Skip Schiel

From September 2004 thru January 2005 I volunteered my services as a photographer, pro bono. I was in Israel and Palestine photographing for several organizations. I asked only that my living expenses while photographing were paid for--housing, transport, food.

I am a professional photographer, concentrating on issues of social justice. Organizations in South Africa and the US South that I've worked for have used my photographs for publicity, archives, publications, slide shows, fundraising, and analysis.

In November 2003 I was part of a two week delegation to Israel-Palestine organized by the Fellowship of Reconciliation. The trip was momentous to me. I now plan to expand my experience and the limited photography I did into a major photographic project. Partly to serve as a photographer for organizations which are part of the struggle for peace and justice. And partly to show and tell the story of resistance and reconstruction as I understand it, to an audience in the United States who is woefully denied an understanding of the reality of life in the occupied territories and its context, Israel .

The photographs I made--documentations, portraits, environmental scenes--were used in publications such as newsletters and annual reports, as website content, or as an exhibit to be shown in schools, churches, mosques, and community centers. I could also produce a slide show or videotape from the photos that would be viewable by funders or in libraries, senior citizen centers, or municipal meetings. Another service I offered was graphic design--for flyers, brochures, booklets, and websites. I am also an experienced teacher of photography.

Returning in spring 2006 is a distinct possibility. Is there anything I can do for your Palestinian or Israeli organization?

If desired, I can provide references.
