Spring Light—Boston :: April 2009

The day began partly cloudy, modulating the sunrise which many of us observed and photographed from a dock behind the aquarium. 6 AM was the perfect moment. Clouds grew in number, and lost definition, so that by the end of our 4-hour session we worked under an overcast sky.

The exercises for this Spring Light Photography Workshop began with light (backlight, reflections, shadows, light on dark), frame (1 thing framed 10 different ways), time (1 frame with 10 different exposures, something changing in time), wild mind photography, design your own exercise to meet a challenge you face, free time, and finally write about a high point and a low point to relate to us later at the next review.

I headed south, wishing to explore the industrial area and photograph it more. I’m here fairly often but rarely with the time and equipment for photography. The walk was long, I carried heavy equip including my telephoto lens (which I needed to photograph the Big Apple circus later that day), and the area, as expected, was fairly dreary. Among highlights: a huge ship in dry-dock, workers scurrying around on and near it; the fancy moorings in front of the fancy condo complexes; the many views of expansive sky. Maybe this last was my main highlight, the sky and the many views of it. The low was the long tiring walk. My legs hurt; perhaps wearing my Tiva sandals was not a good idea.
